Why Do We Love Thunderstorm Sounds?

There are so many people who enjoy thunderstorms that there is even a word for this experience. Chrysalism refers to the tranquil quality of relaxing indoors as a thunderstorm rages outside. While it might be terrifying to be outdoors in an actual thunderstorm, these storms are wonderful if you experience them from inside your home. For many people, the contrast between the danger of the storm and the safety inside makes hearing the thunder even more relaxing. It is like a chaotic reminder of how safe and secure you are within your home.

Why Do Thunderstorms Make Us Feel That Way?

For many people, thunderstorm sounds are incredibly relaxing. When you hear rain hitting your umbrella or rooftop, you get to enjoy a background noise that boosts your sleep quality. In addition, your mind may already be trained to connect the sound of the thunderstorm to feeling sleepy from melatonin. The smell of a thunderstorm can also make you relaxed.

Interestingly, smelling rain and lightning can cause feelings of relaxation. When lightning interacts with the air, it creates a molecule known as ozone. This molecule is created from three oxygen atoms. The ozone scent smells like chlorine or bleach. Meanwhile, the earthy scent of rain can be incredibly relaxing. Plants normally release certain oils during dry periods to prevent seeds from trying to grow when there is not enough rain. Once it rains, these oils are washed off and blend with a chemical known as geosemin. Geosemin is naturally made by bacteria in the soil. Together, these two chemicals produce a musky scent. You can smell the same scent by turning over the soil in a garden bed.

Whether we love the sound, scent or smell of a thunderstorm, one thing is for certain. Many people feel more relaxed during a storm. With the perfect amount of rain and lightning, you can look forward to a better night's sleep.
